Stronsay Forge · One of a Kind

A unique piece of traditional Orkney horncraft, individually carved and finished by hand.

Made from genuine Orkney Boreray ram horn, this piece combines the natural beauty of a rare heritage material with intricate Norse-inspired decoration.

Every curve, colour variation and natural marking belongs to this individual horn. The carving has been designed to complement its shape rather than conceal it.

01 · The Craft

Carved by Hand

Around the wider opening, an intricate band of interlacing knotwork has been carefully carved by hand, drawing inspiration from historical Norse decorative traditions.

The raised knotwork is surrounded by a finely textured background, with pyrography used to darken the recessed details and bring definition to the design.

At the narrow end, an Algiz rune from the Elder Futhark alphabet provides a final decorative detail.

The horn has been cleaned, prepared and finished by hand, retaining its distinctive natural curve and colouring throughout.

02 · The Material

Orkney Boreray Horn

Boreray sheep are a rare heritage breed descended from the traditional short-tailed sheep of the Scottish islands.

Their horns are a remarkable natural material, each with its own shape, grain and colouring. These individual characteristics are an important part of traditional horncraft.

The warm cream and amber tones, darker markings and natural surface lines have been deliberately retained, allowing the original material to remain central to the finished piece.

No two horns grow alike, and no two pieces of horncraft can ever be quite the same.

04 · One of a Kind

One Horn. One Finished Piece.

This is an individual, completed work of traditional craftsmanship, not a standard design reproduced to order.

Its shape, colouring, carved knotwork and pyrographed decoration are specific to this particular horn.

It would make a distinctive addition to a collection of historical crafts, a Norse-inspired display or a carefully assembled reenactment costume.

Only one is available. You will receive the exact horn shown in the photographs.
